American Muslims Celebrate Abdul El-Sayed's Historic Victory with Hope and Caution

American Muslim voters have reacted with a mix of hope and concern to Dr. Abdul El-Sayed's step closer to becoming the United States' first Muslim senator. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan, earning the right to face off against Republican Mike Rogers in the general election in November. If he wins, he will become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history. Born in Michigan to an Egyptian immigrant family, Dr. El-Sayed has become a beacon of hope for American Muslims at a time when anti-Muslim rhetoric and policies are on the rise, especially in southern states. Bilal Baydoun, a 36-year-old writer and political strategist from Dearborn, Michigan, celebrated Dr. El-Sayed's victory, saying:

Growing up Muslim in America, you're often told that to be successful, you need to hide this part of your identity. Seeing him wear his name with pride, even emphasizing his full name at times, still feels revolutionary.

Dr. El-Sayed's primary opponent, Representative Haley Stevens, received at least $40 million in support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's (AIPAC) political action committee (Super PAC). Dr. El-Sayed's criticisms of the Gaza war and Israel's policies in the region became one of the most debated issues in the primary.
