7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mexico: Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal city of Puerto Madero in Mexico's southern state of Chiapas. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a relatively shallow depth of 10 km. Eyewitnesses reported that the earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring Guatemala. Following the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat warning for the region. The system stated, “Hazardous tsunami waves from the earthquake are possible within 300 km of the epicenter along the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala”
