Discovery of Organic Carbon on Mars: Perseverance's New Findings
The Perseverance spacecraft has detected preserved organic carbon just beneath the surface of Mars, raising new questions about the planet's ancient environments. Last year, NASA announced that Perseverance had found a potential biological signature. Now, a new study published in Science Advances has confirmed the presence of organic carbon in two rocks in the Bright Angel formation. Organic carbon is a fundamental building block of life, but it can also be formed through non-biological processes. The research team used the SHERLOC instrument on Perseverance's robotic arm to analyze the rocks in the Jezero crater's Bright Angel formation. The analysis revealed the presence of macromolecular carbon, a structure composed of complex networks of carbon atoms. This type of carbon is common on Earth and in meteorites, but its presence alone is not considered proof of life, as it can be formed through both biological and non-biological means. The researchers found that the macromolecular carbon was preserved just a few microns below the surface of Mars, the shallowest depth at which it has been detected on the planet to date. The discovery of organic matter so close to the surface of the rock suggests that the material is resistant to degradation or is protected by the surrounding minerals. The finding also expands the map of organic compounds on Mars.
