New Record in Migrant Crossings of the English Channel: 230 People Reach England on a Single Boat

The English Channel has seen the highest number of migrant crossings to date. A inflatable boat, approximately 15 meters in length, set off from the north-east coast of France and carried 230 people, including over 20 children, setting a new record for the number of people crossing the channel on a single small boat.This surpasses the previous record set last month when 165 people crossed the channel on a single boat. The boat was tracked by French rescue teams until it reached British territorial waters, where it was handed over to British teams.The new record comes at a time when the dangers of channel crossings are once again in the spotlight. Last week, another boat carrying over 150 people caught fire and capsized, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.The UK Home Office has not confirmed the number of people on the latest crossing, but described the methods used by people-smuggling groups as dangerous and irresponsible. The UK government is working to increase cooperation with France to reduce small boat crossings of the English Channel.The number of migrants reaching England in small boats has decreased by over 42% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, to just over 14,000. However, crossings have picked up again in recent weeks, with 752 people making the crossing on July 29, the highest daily total of 2026.
