Court Ruling: Trump Ordered to Pay $5.8 Million in Damages
A federal judge in the US has ruled that former President Donald Trump must pay approximately $5.8 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll.Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Manhattan District Court ordered the payment of the damages, which had been held in escrow since a jury verdict in 2023.Kaplan stated that Trump had delayed the case for years, saying "The defendant has been stalling this case for years. It's time to pay the awarded damages."In the 2023 trial, the jury found that Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll and later defamed her with his statements. The ruling ordered Trump to pay $2 million for the sexual assault and $3 million for defamation, totaling $5 million. With approximately $800,000 in interest, the total payment amounts to $5.8 million.Trump's lawyers announced that they would continue to appeal the decision, arguing that the case was driven by political motives and that payment should not be made until the appeal process is complete.
