Drone Incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport: EU and NATO Expected to Respond

Munich Security Conference Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger emphasized that the discovery of a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport should be addressed not only at the national level but also by the EU and NATO. German security agencies reported that the drone was detected by airport staff on the night of Wednesday. The Bild newspaper noted that Ukrainian aircraft were located near the drone carrying explosives. The Leipzig/Halle Airport is considered a significant hub for air transportation to Ukraine. Ischinger stated that dealing with the incident solely through Germany's unilateral response would be incorrect, saying, “First, we should involve the institutions we are members of. First, the European Union, and then perhaps NATO, given that this type of situation affects our country's fundamental foreign and security policy interests.” In contrast, the Russian Embassy in Berlin described the incident as a hastily staged provocation serving the purposes of the Kiev regime and the militaristic wing of the European elite.
