In Norway's Svalbard archipelago, a person was fined approximately $5,000 for waking up a sleeping polar bear by blowing a ship's foghorn.The incident occurred in early August in a fjord in the northern part of the archipelago. Passengers on a ship spotted a polar bear sleeping on land, and someone on board blew the foghorn, which is typically used as a warning signal.The polar bear woke up and moved to another area. The governor of Svalbard announced that the person was fined after it was determined that the incident was intentional.The environmental protection laws in Svalbard prohibit disturbing, luring, or following polar bears without a valid reason.Experts note that polar bears struggle to find food during the summer months due to the reduction of sea ice. They warn that well-fed polar bears can remain stationary for extended periods to conserve energy, but disturbances can lead to unnecessary energy expenditure, which can have significant consequences for pregnant or nursing female polar bears.It is estimated that around 3,000 polar bears live in the Svalbard and Barents Sea region, with approximately 300 of them staying in Svalbard year-round.
