Cryptocurrency Market Sees Significant Fluctuation: Bitcoin Plummets to 21-Month Low
The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has plummeted to its lowest level in 21 months due to concerns over higher interest rates and its largest corporate buyer. Bitcoin dropped by as much as 1.5% to $57,742, its lowest level since September 17, 2024, before somewhat stabilizing. The hawkish comments from Federal Reserve (Fed) policymakers have fueled expectations of higher interest rates, causing capital to flee from non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies. Investors withdrew more than $4 billion from Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed in the US in June; this is the largest outflow since the funds were launched two years ago. Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG Australia, stated that Bitcoin is "facing increasing headwinds from changing Fed rate expectations and a strengthening US dollar." He added that the upcoming US non-farm payroll report this weekend could create additional pressure if it reinforces the Fed's hawkish stance.
