The Reemergence of 'Frankenstein Rabbits' Sparks Concern
With the arrival of summer, the 'Frankenstein rabbits' with appendage-like growths on their heads and bodies have reappeared in the US. Following the detection of Shope papilloma virus, which causes these frightening tumors, multiple states have issued successive warnings, while wildlife experts have explained the transmission routes and dangers of the virus.Across the United States, the typically cute cotton-tailed rabbits have been observed with appendage-like structures hanging from their faces and bodies. The public's panic has prompted official statements and warnings from authorities. Initially identified in Colorado in August 2025, these cases have spread to other states during the summer.Wildlife and rabbit experts have stated that the cause of these terrifying growths is the Shope papilloma virus. The virus causes malignant tumors on the rabbits' heads, but it does not spread directly from animal to animal. Experts have announced that the primary vectors of the virus are infected insects, and rabbits contract the disease after being bitten by these insects, especially mosquitoes and ticks.Although the appendage-like growths on the rabbits' heads are particularly concerning for pet owners, they do not always have a lethal effect on wildlife. According to an official statement by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), 'These tumors do not have a significant impact on wild rabbits as long as they do not interfere with eating and drinking.' However, experts have warned that in some exceptional cases, these growths can progress into a serious skin cancer type called squamous cell carcinoma. One of the most pressing questions for citizens who encounter these unusual creatures at night or in open areas is whether the virus can be transmitted to humans. Scientists have reassured the public that humans are not at risk of contracting the virus and developing similar growths.
