The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread. According to United Nations data, the number of confirmed cases has reached 1,307, and the number of deaths has risen to 377. The spread of the virus to Haut-Uele means that the entire northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to approximately 15 million people, is now at risk.The virus is generally spread in the region through funeral ceremonies, where the bodies of Ebola victims are handled manually. For weeks, health workers have been trying to organize safe funeral ceremonies in affected areas to prevent contact with the deceased, but in the Democratic Republic of Congo, funeral ceremonies often last for several days, during which time family members and friends come into contact with the body of the deceased, which is a significant factor in the spread of the virus.
