Clinical Trial Begins Against Deadly Ebola Outbreak in Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the start of a clinical trial for two experimental treatments against the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the first patient has been enrolled in the treatment trial, emphasizing the critical importance of developing safe and effective treatments in the fight against the outbreak.In the DRC, over 1,400 cases and 438 deaths have been confirmed so far. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus responsible for the current outbreak.The clinical trial is sponsored by the WHO and coordinated by the National Biomedical Research Institute (INRB) of the DRC, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and researchers from the University of Oxford in the UK. According to WHO data, as of June 30, the DRC has reported 1,406 confirmed cases, 301 suspected cases, and 438 deaths.
