Ebola Outbreak Spreads to New Region in Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now spread to the previously unaffected Bas-Uele region, sparking concerns among the local population. According to Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the head of the National Institute for Biomedical Research, the deceased was a motorcycle taxi driver who had traveled from Haut-Uele, where Ebola cases were previously confirmed. The patient showed symptoms consistent with Ebola in Buta, the capital of Bas-Uele, before passing away, and a post-mortem test confirmed the presence of the virus. For Bas-Uele to be added to the list of affected regions, a case of local transmission must be detected in the area.
