Ebola Outbreak in Congo Continues to Grow: Death Toll Nears 500

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached alarming levels. In the past 24 hours, 19 more people have lost their lives, bringing the total death toll to 492 and the number of confirmed cases to 1528. According to the Ministry of Communication and Media of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 26 new Ebola cases were detected in the past day, increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 1528. The Ebola outbreak started on May 15 in the eastern part of the country and has also affected neighboring Uganda. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes the Ebola virus as a severe and often deadly disease in humans. Symptoms include high fever, severe fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, and in advanced stages, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, kidney and liver dysfunction, and internal and external bleeding can occur. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, and tissues of infected humans or animals. Health workers, caregivers, and people in close contact with infected individuals are at higher risk. The World Health Organization's definition of the Ebola virus and the impact of the outbreak pose a significant threat to the people living in Congo.
