Ebola Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Rising Case and Death Toll

The 17th Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a surge in cases, with 1561 confirmed and 506 deaths. According to the Ministry of Health, the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola has recorded 1561 cases, resulting in 506 fatalities.Health teams are working on early diagnosis in 36 areas across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, which have been affected by the outbreak. As new antiviral treatment trials begin, over 100 health workers have also been infected with Ebola. The outbreak was declared on May 15 after 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths were reported in the Ituri province in eastern DRC.Health officials say the current outbreak is caused by a rare Ebola variant known as "Bundibugyo" with no approved treatment or vaccine. The Ebola virus, which causes a type of hemorrhagic fever, first emerged in 1976 in simultaneous outbreaks in Nzara, Sudan, and Yambuku, DRC. The disease was named after the Ebola River, near which the outbreak occurred in DRC. The Ebola virus spread across West Africa in December 2013, infecting 30,000 people and killing over 11,000 in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone between 2014 and 2017.
