New Administration in Colombia Faces 'Israel' Backlash

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has strongly criticized President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella for promising to reestablish diplomatic relations with Israel. Petro described this move as an 'insult to national honor'. Petro referenced the situation in Gaza, stating

They want to reestablish diplomatic relations with a government that has killed 22,000 babies with rockets in Gaza. Such a government embarrasses me. How can a Congress allow the reestablishment of relations with a government that has killed 22,000 babies? This is an insult to our national honor.

After handing over power, Petro announced that he will not withdraw from politics and will lead a strong opposition against the new administration.In his speech at the opening session of Congress, Petro also targeted US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Reiterating his refusal to recognize the election results, Petro claimed that the US administration interfered in the election process in favor of de la Espriella.Petro evaluated his term in office, arguing that the policies implemented have reduced poverty and crime rates.
