Weight Loss Alone May Not Prevent Diabetes

Weight Loss Alone May Not Prevent Diabetes
Research has shown that weight loss and healthy lifestyle habits may not be enough to prevent type 2 diabetes in everyone. Scientists have found that some people may still be at high risk of diabetes despite losing weight. A study conducted by the German Diabetes Research Center, Tübingen University Hospital, and Helmholtz Munich examined the effects of long-term weight loss on people at risk of type 2 diabetes. The study analyzed data from people with a high risk of diabetes over several years. A significant portion of the participants managed to lose around 8% of their body weight and maintain the weight loss over time. However, some people continued to have high blood sugar levels, reduced insulin production, and a high risk of type 2 diabetes despite the weight loss. The researchers found that people in the 'risk cluster 5' group, which they had previously identified, had different outcomes compared to other groups. According to the scientists, if the findings are confirmed, it may be necessary to develop personalized prevention methods for type 2 diabetes.
