Killer Whales Ramming and Dissecting Prey May Be a Form of Play

Scientists have found that killer whales ramming and dissecting dead sunfish at high speed may be a behavior aimed at facilitating the feeding of their young or a form of play. In a study conducted in California, USA, between July 2024 and September 2025, two recorded events were analyzed. The first set of images showed a female orca holding a dead sunfish by its tail, while an adult male orca sped up and rammed the fish. After the collision, the fish was torn into multiple pieces, and a young orca was observed consuming the smaller fragments, while the adults fed on the larger pieces. In the second event recorded in September 2025, a similar scenario unfolded, with a female orca holding a dead sunfish that was then rammed by another orca, causing it to break into dozens of pieces. According to the study, the number of killer whales, their age groups, and their interaction with the prey were examined, and it was determined that the whales' behavior was not intended to kill, given that the sunfish were already dead before being torn apart. The research suggests that this behavior may be part of the social interaction or play behavior among orcas.
