Canada Declares State of Emergency Due to Forest Fire

A rapidly spreading forest fire in the Canadian province of British Columbia has led to the evacuation of approximately 22,000 people. British Columbia Premier David Eby announced that over 100 forest fires are burning across the province, with about half of them uncontrolled. The fires are spreading rapidly due to high temperatures, strong winds, and prolonged drought. The entire town of Summerland, with a population of around 12,000, was evacuated overnight. An additional 8,000 people in the nearby town of Peachland and surrounding areas were also ordered to evacuate. Authorities have not yet determined the number of homes damaged or destroyed by the fire. British Columbia Wildfire Service Operations Director Cliff Chapman stated that the fire affected the Faulder settlement quickly and spread approximately 15 kilometers in a remarkably short time, reaching Summerland. Cliff Chapman described the fire conditions in the province as 'explosive' and warned that similar incidents could occur in other residential areas, leading to the evacuation of Summerland. Helicopters were deployed to rescue people who could not escape by road. Erick Thompson, the emergency manager for the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District, described the fire as one of the fastest-spreading and fastest-growing fires the region has ever seen.
