Canadian Prime Minister Carney: Various Responses Possible to US Additional Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the government has various options to respond if the US imposes an additional 50% tariff on Canadian products. Carney indicated that if the US were to implement the tariff threat, 'whatever is necessary can be done', and the government is in a position to respond immediately, but this step is not currently preferred as it may negatively impact trade negotiations with Washington.

Whatever is necessary has many dimensions. If these tariffs or other measures come into effect, we can respond and we have many options available.

In response to the question of how the Trump administration would convince the public that it would adhere to a potential agreement, Carney said, 'I need to be convinced, the Canadian team needs to be convinced, the prime ministers need to be convinced so that this agreement has any value, even on paper.'

Carney also added that following the US tariff threat, negotiations have been accelerated to reach a comprehensive trade agreement covering all tariff items between the two countries.
