Cambodia Protests to Thailand Over Border Dispute

Cambodia has issued a formal protest to Thailand, accusing it of placing new border markers along their shared border. The move has reignited a long-standing border dispute between the two countries. According to a report by the Phnom Penh Post, Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stated that Thai officials had conducted land surveys in the Chouk Chey village of Banteay Meanchey province. The statement alleged that a team of around 25 Thai officials, accompanied by 9 vehicles, had carried out border demarcation work and installed new markers between June 18-22. The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back to the 19th century when the borders were defined during the French occupation of Cambodia. The first clashes occurred in 2008 when Cambodia attempted to have a disputed temple area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
