Animal Shelter Scandal in California: Fate of Hundreds of Animals Unknown

An investigation is underway at the Miranda Animal Rescue Center in Fortuna, California, after more than 700 animals went missing.The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office stated that out of approximately 900 animals that arrived at the center since January 2025, only 116 have been confirmed to have been adopted, while the fate of over 700 animals remains unknown.Authorities reported finding numerous dead animals at the center and noted that the investigation is not limited to animal-related allegations, as the center's financial records are also being examined for potential fraud.Shannon Miranda, the owner of the Miranda Animal Rescue Center, denied the allegations and stated that the center has a 'no-kill policy'.The authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing with the support of state and federal agencies, and efforts to determine the fate of the missing animals and the validity of the allegations are continuing.
