Johnson & Johnson Offers $5.5 Billion Settlement

Johnson & Johnson Offers $5.5 Billion Settlement
Johnson & Johnson has proposed a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve approximately 76,000 lawsuits claiming that its talc-based baby powder and other products cause ovarian cancer. The offer requires the approval of at least 95% of the plaintiffs. For the settlement to take effect, at least 95% of the plaintiffs must accept the offer.Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay a total of $5.5 billion, with no more than $3 billion to be paid in 2027 and no additional payments to be made before 2028.The settlement offer comes after a federal court ruled in favor of Johnson & Johnson in July. The court found that the plaintiffs had not sufficiently proven that the company's talc products directly caused ovarian cancer. The company has defended itself, stating that it has won the majority of the lawsuits and that the settlement offer will allow it to focus on its business.Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its talc-based products cause cancer, citing scientific research that shows talc is safe, does not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer.
