Death Toll in Japan Earthquake Rises to 36
The number of people killed in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture has risen to 36. Rescue efforts are continuing, with 80,000 households still without water and more than 9,000 people taking shelter in evacuation centers. Japanese Prime Minister Takaiçi Sanae announced that the government has received condolences and offers of support from 56 countries and 7 international organizations. According to the Ministry of Health, 53 medical facilities in the affected area are still without water or electricity. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake occurred at 16:27 local time on July 28 in the Uki and Hikawa areas.
