Iceland to Vote on EU Membership Again: What Do the Polls Say?

Iceland will hold a referendum on 29 August to decide whether the government should restart membership talks with the EU. This referendum will not only test Iceland's relations with Europe but also the changing security dynamics.The Icelandic government, led by Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, plans to hold the referendum a year earlier than initially planned, citing increased security concerns following US President Donald Trump's comments on Greenland. The government argues that EU membership would provide Iceland with political stability and security.However, opposition parties are against EU membership, primarily due to concerns about the country's fishing industry, a crucial sector of the economy. They argue that the EU's Common Fisheries Policy could weaken Iceland's control over its own waters and compromise national sovereignty.According to a poll by the national broadcaster RUV, 54% of voters are against EU membership, while 46% support it. In contrast, a poll conducted for the leading newspaper Morgunblaðið found that 52% of respondents supported restarting membership talks, while 48% were opposed.If the referendum results in a 'yes' vote, Iceland will not immediately join the EU. Instead, membership talks with Brussels will resume. The government has also pledged to hold a second referendum on the final membership agreement after negotiations are completed.
