Italy Calls for Pardon of Jeweler Who Killed Robbers

In Italy, a 72-year-old jeweler shot and killed two robbers who had attempted to rob his store. Security footage showed the jeweler chasing the robbers outside the store.
The jeweler, Mario Roggero, received strong support from the ruling parties. The parties argued that the jeweler was defending his life and property.
However, the Italian Supreme Court rejected Roggero's appeal against his 14-year and 9-month prison sentence. The court ruled that the jeweler had exceeded the limits of self-defense by shooting the robbers after the threat had ended.
Those who argue that Roggero is guilty claim that he exceeded the limits of self-defense by shooting the robbers outside the store.
The ruling parties announced that they would start a petition campaign to support Roggero's pardon. According to Italian law, such requests are first examined by the Ministry of Justice and then submitted to the President Sergio Mattarella for evaluation.
