Italy Witnessed Its Most Severe Earthquake in 40 Years: 4.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Near Naples

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei region near Naples, Italy, yesterday evening, resulting in at least 21 injuries and over 250 people being evacuated from their homes. The quake, which occurred at a depth of approximately 3 kilometers, was felt in Naples, the island of Ischia, and the Sorrento Peninsula. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) stated that this earthquake is part of the ongoing seismic activity in the region. Following the main quake, around 60 aftershocks were recorded, with the largest one having a magnitude of 3.1. The earthquake caused power outages in Campi Flegrei and disruptions in public transportation. A building partially collapsed in the nearby town of Pozzuoli, and large boulders fell onto parked cars. Authorities reported that nine buildings have been deemed unsafe for use, and ferry services from the damaged Pozzuoli Pier have been suspended. High-speed train services also experienced hours of delays. Citizens spent the night on the streets for safety reasons, and damage assessment efforts are ongoing.
