Record Temperatures in the Swiss Alps Cause Unprecedented Glacier Melting

Matthias Huss, Director of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, stated that the record heatwave affecting Europe and Switzerland has caused unprecedented glacier melting in the Alps. Huss noted that scientists have shown that only human-induced climate change could lead to such intense and prolonged heatwaves. Climate change, along with the sun's more direct impact on the Earth's surface and its contribution to warming, are factors causing high temperatures. Due to the temperatures, the glaciers in the Swiss Alps are melting at a faster rate, according to Huss, who emphasized that glaciers are made up of frozen snow and ice and melt more quickly when it's warm. Huss stated that the glaciers in the Swiss Alps were already in a bad state before the latest heatwave and that they had just experienced a winter with low snowfall. Huss stressed that the glacier loss in the Alps is a truly alarming situation, and another year of extreme glacier loss is expected.
