Istanbul Heatwave: Temperatures to Reach 40 Degrees

A heatwave is expected to hit Istanbul, with temperatures feeling like 40 degrees. The heatwave, which is affecting the entire country, is expected to cause temperatures to rise to 32 degrees in the city's Anatolian side. However, with humidity, the temperature is expected to feel like 40 degrees. Dr. Deniz Demirhan, a lecturer at the Istanbul Technical University's (ITU) Department of Climate Science and Meteorological Engineering, stated that the heatwave from the northwest is affecting Edirne, Thrace, the Aegean, the Mediterranean, and the Marmara regions. Regarding the weather in Istanbul, Demirhan said, "Istanbul is under the influence of the heatwave from the northwest. Temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees in the Anatolian side, especially today and tomorrow. This is just the measured temperature. If we look at the felt temperature, there is also a humidity effect. Of course, when combined with humidity, the felt temperature can reach 40 degrees, which can easily affect sensitive individuals, children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses."

We need to protect ourselves from the sun by wearing a hat or not staying in the sun for too long. It's also necessary to carry a thermos or a water bottle with us. Dr. Demirhan noted that Istanbul is not the hottest region, but the "urban heat island" effect created by urbanization poses a significant risk. "Istanbul is a city that cannot cool down at night.
