Schools in Istanbul to Have Mosques: Governorship Sends Letter to District Governorships

Following the decision to open mosques in schools in Istanbul, the Governorship of Istanbul sent a letter to 39 district governorships and related institutions. The letter, signed by Governor Davut Gül, requests that new schools be built with mosques and that existing schools convert suitable areas into mosques so that students can perform their prayers. Providing for the spiritual needs of students is crucial in line with the community's spiritual values and the fundamental rights and freedoms of students. Creating spaces within schools where students can practice their faith and perform their prayers is an essential component of education services.Governor Gül emphasized the importance of creating suitable physical conditions for students to perform their prayers safely and efficiently during appropriate time intervals, minimizing exits from school for prayer purposes, and ensuring that educational hours are used productively. To this end, it is requested that new schools and educational institutions be designed with sufficient physical capacity to accommodate Friday prayers and that existing schools and educational institutions convert existing areas into mosques for Friday prayers.
