Finding a Grave in Istanbul Becomes a Luxury: Prices Reach 334,000 Lira
In Istanbul, finding a grave in central cemeteries is becoming increasingly impossible, with prices reaching 334,000 lira for remaining empty graves outside of those allocated for free by the municipality. The occupancy rate in central Istanbul graves has reached 90%. Those who do not want to bury their loved ones in distant grave areas can buy the grave they want by paying the fee. The cheapest empty grave is 10,728 lira, while the most expensive grave is 334,896 lira. According to a report by NTV, it is becoming difficult to find a grave in large cities. Central cemeteries are approaching full capacity, while cemeteries outside the city are located in remote areas. Especially those who do not want to travel to remote areas for grave visits are having the burial done in the grave of their choice by paying the fee when their loved ones pass away. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality does not charge any fees for the graves it allocates. However, graves purchased by the deceased or their relatives before passing away are subject to a fee. Graves in Istanbul are categorized and each group has its own price.
