Invasive Bird Species Spreads Rapidly in Istanbul: The Common Myna

The Common Myna, one of the world's 100 most invasive species, is spreading rapidly in Istanbul. Experts warn that this invasive bird species is putting pressure on local bird populations, particularly sparrows. Native to India, Pakistan, and parts of South Asia, the Common Myna is expanding its territory in Istanbul. This bird, belonging to the starling family, is recognized by its brown plumage, yellow legs, and yellow skin around its eyes. Dr. Ergün Bacak, a lecturer at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Forestry Vocational School, notes that the species' ability to adapt to urban life is due to its omnivorous diet. Dr. Bacak also states that as long as humans continue to leave food waste, the population of the Common Myna will continue to grow. The species has been widely spotted in various parts of Istanbul, particularly in Gülhane Park, Yıldız Park, Emirgan Grove, and Marmara University Maltepe Campus. Dr. Bacak attributes this to the species' ability to compete with other bird species for food and nesting sites, posing a significant threat to local bird populations.
