The European Union has failed to establish a unified stance on potential measures against Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories. Following discussions at the ambassadorial level, no concrete decision was reached, and significant differences of opinion persist among member states. In recent months, calls have increased within the EU for tougher action against Israeli settlements, with various sanction options being considered in the latest meeting. However, no proposal garnered sufficient support from member states.Diplomatic sources indicate that the process lacks a clear roadmap and has been put on hold for the time being.EU ambassadors evaluated various sanction options that could be applied to Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.Proposals on the table included stricter enforcement of existing labeling rules for products manufactured in settlements, imposition of additional customs duties, and a complete ban on trade with these regions. The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, had previously stated that the most support was given to the option of banning trade with 'illegal settlements'.
However, diplomats speaking to Euronews reported that no proposal received sufficient backing during the ambassadors' meeting.According to the report, the Netherlands, Sweden, and France support tougher measures against Israeli settlements, while Germany and the Czech Republic oppose steps that could negatively impact relations with the Israeli government.Diplomatic sources noted that while the trade ban option approached a simple majority, it failed to reach the required support level of 14 countries. The EU Council, under the presidency of Ireland, announced that bilateral contacts with member states will continue throughout the summer. The likelihood of an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers, which was previously considered, is deemed low due to the current political agenda.
