Historic Agreement Between Israel and Lebanon: Withdrawal from South Lebanon
The framework agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon under the mediation of the US is seen as a significant step towards reducing the long-standing tension between the two countries. As part of the agreement, the Israeli army will withdraw from two areas in South Lebanon and transfer control to the Lebanese army. The parties emphasized that this step is the first stage of a more comprehensive peace process. However, Hezbollah strongly opposed the agreement, calling on the government to withdraw from the negotiations.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will withdraw from an area north of the Litani River and a second point south of the river. Netanyahu stated that these areas are no longer needed by the Israeli army. According to the agreement, the Lebanese army will gradually take over security responsibility in the areas from which Israel will withdraw, as part of a pilot program.
