Morocco Accuses Spain of Violence Against Migrants

Morocco has accused Spanish security forces of using violence against migrants who crossed into Ceuta. A preliminary report by the Moroccan National Human Rights Council (CNDH) stated that around 80,000 migrants who entered Ceuta in July were subjected to violence by Spanish security forces. Morocco also reaffirmed its claim of sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla.Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Wehbi stated that Morocco maintains its historical claim of sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla and that the issue remains on the table in negotiations with Spain. The CNDH had previously accused Spanish authorities of similar wrongdoing, holding them responsible for the deaths of at least 23 people during incidents at the Melilla border in 2022.The Moroccan public prosecutor's office later closed the case, citing a lack of evidence of any crime. This decision sparked controversy, with some reports suggesting that Moroccan officials had relaxed border controls. Morocco continues to assert its claim of sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, while also calling for the return of unaccompanied Moroccan children being held in Spanish centers.
