The Bears of Spain: When Size Matters, Some Lie

The Bears of Spain: When Size Matters, Some Lie
An international team of scientists made an intriguing discovery about the brown bears of Spain's Cantabrian Mountains. The study found that some bears attempt to appear larger than they actually are. The research, conducted on brown bears in the regions of Leon, Asturias, and Cantabria, Spain, revealed that certain male bears exhibit unusual behavior to deceive their rivals. A small fraction of the bears leave marks at higher points than their actual height allows, making themselves appear bigger. According to the study, only seven of the 164 male brown bears used this method, which corresponds to about 4.3% of the individuals examined. The analysis showed that 57.1% of the seven bears were adults, while 42.9% were younger bears.
