Spain Expects Sahara Desert-Like Conditions as Heatwave Hits

Spain has just experienced its hottest first six months on record and is bracing for another heatwave starting from July 3. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has announced that many areas, particularly in the southern regions of Andalusia and Extremadura, will be placed under a "orange alert", the second-highest level of warning. It has been reported that since official meteorological records began in 1961, the first six months of 2026 have been the hottest on record in Spain.

Human-induced climate change is the main reason behind these extreme temperature values. This situation causes both the atmosphere and the seas and oceans surrounding Spain to heat up, resulting in more severe high temperatures.

Additionally, it has been noted that of the 12 heatwaves that have occurred in Spain since 1975, half of them have taken place after 2015. Authorities have warned that the upcoming heatwave will bring "Sahra Desert-like conditions" to many parts of the country, advising those with chronic illnesses and the elderly to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, stay in shaded and cool areas, and drink plenty of water.
