Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez on Ceuta: 'Infringement of Our Territorial Sovereignty'
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the mass irregular migration attempt in Ceuta as 'an infringement of our territorial sovereignty'. Sanchez stated that human trafficking networks have undermined recent progress in reducing illegal migration. The Spanish Prime Minister announced that the process of returning migrants who entered Ceuta irregularly has been accelerated. Sanchez thanked the Moroccan authorities for their cooperation and noted that migrants were informed about the open border crossings to return to their countries. The Spanish government will assess whether changes are needed in the legal regulations to ensure the repatriation of illegal immigrants. Morocco has also been asked to increase its efforts on border security. It is estimated that over 49,000 people have crossed from Morocco to Ceuta in the last 24 hours. Following the crisis, the Spanish government deployed armed forces to the region to ensure security.
