Woman Arrested for Ordering Over 2,100 Manga Online and Then Canceling Them: 'I Did It Due to Stress'

In Japan, a woman who placed over 2,100 orders for manga products on a comic book publisher's online shopping site and then canceled them has been arrested on suspicion of 'impeding a commercial business by fraud.' According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, a indictment has been prepared against Yoshida Mayu, a restaurant worker, on charges of 'impeding a commercial business by fraud.' It is alleged that Yoshida placed over 2,100 orders for 'One Piece' and 'Naruto' manga products on the online shopping site of comic book publisher Shueisha Inc. between July 2024 and May 2025, and then canceled them without paying. It is claimed that Yoshida used 238 different accounts to place the orders, waited until the payment deadline to cancel them automatically, and then refused to accept the packages after selecting the 'pay at the door' option. The total value of the canceled orders is reported to have exceeded 4.3 billion yen (27.2 million dollars). 32-year-old Yoshida admitted to the allegations in her statement to the police. She stated that her actions were due to 'stress accumulated in her daily life,' saying, 'I generally like anime. Ordering products gave me a sense of fulfilling my desires.' Shueisha Inc. announced that they suffered significant financial losses, including temporary stock shortages, lost sales opportunities, and delayed payments to shipping companies.
