UK Proposes Midnight Social Media Lockout for Teenagers
The UK government has taken a significant step towards restricting social media usage among 16 and 17-year-old teenagers. According to the plan, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube will be disabled by default for this age group between midnight and 06.00 AM. Users will have the option to override this restriction by changing their account settings. Additionally, the government is proposing that features like autoplay and infinite scrolling be disabled by default. Minister for Technology Liz Kendall noted that these regulations will contribute to teenagers sleeping better, focusing on their education, and spending more time with their families. The government's plan aims to allow teenagers to benefit from the opportunities technology offers while providing tools for them to develop safely in the online world. Kendall stated, 'While we want teenagers to benefit from the opportunities technology offers, we also want to provide them with the tools to develop safely in the online world.' The government plans to present this regulation to Parliament by the end of 2026 and implement it alongside the planned ban on social media for those under 16, set to take effect next spring. According to the plan announced in June, children under 16 in the UK will be completely banned from using several social media platforms. The government also plans to implement measures such as regular break reminders for providers to enable under-18 users to use AI chatbots more safely.
