India's Mysterious Underwater City: Traces of a 9,500-Year-Old Civilization

The massive structure complex discovered 36 meters underwater in the Khambhat Körfezi off India's west coast is considered one of the most controversial archaeological discoveries that could rewrite human history. The approximately 9,500-year-old remains suggest the possibility of a city even older than the Indus Valley Civilization. First detected in December 2000 by the Indian National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), the structure remains one of the most debated discoveries in the archaeology world despite the passage of over 20 years. According to experts, if the claims are verified, this discovery could lead to a reevaluation of the history of civilization as we know it. The city-like formations were discovered by chance during routine marine pollution research by NIOT teams in the area. During sonar scans, striking geometric structures were detected on the seabed, and subsequent work in the area uncovered pottery fragments, beads, statues, wall remains, human bones, and teeth. The then-Indian Minister of Science and Technology, Murli Manohar Joshi, announced the discovery to the public in 2001, stating that the remains could belong to a very ancient civilization.
