India Tunnel Disaster After Landslide: At Least 7 Workers Killed

A tunnel collapse during the construction of a hydroelectric project in India's Uttarakhand state has trapped workers inside. According to local authorities, at least 7 workers have lost their lives, 13 are injured, and 3 are still missing. The region where the accident occurred has been experiencing heavy monsoon rains, which are believed to have contributed to the landslide. Amrit Lal Meena, the commander of the National Disaster Response Force team, stated that upon arrival, they found a large amount of water inside the tunnel and water seeping from the sides. Uttarakhand has been heavily affected by the monsoon rains. Since the start of the monsoon season in June, hundreds of people have lost their lives in floods and landslides across India. Last month, 20 workers lost their lives in another state-owned hydroelectric project tunnel in the northeastern state of Sikkim. Ecologists argue that intensive development projects in the sensitive regions of the Himalayas increase the impact of disasters, while experts say that climate change and unplanned development increase the frequency, severity, and impact of such disasters.
