The Horror of 38 Parasites in the Brain After a Trip to India

Lowri Denman from the UK discovered that she had 38 parasites in her brain after a trip to India. Denman was diagnosed with the rare condition of neurocysticercosis.Denman had traveled to India in 2007 and years later discovered the parasites in her brain. The doctors described the case as one they might encounter only once in their careers.Denman's health issues began when she noticed a meter-long strip of parasites in the toilet in 2010. However, no abnormalities were found in the tests. A year later, Denman started experiencing severe headaches and then had her first epileptic seizure.The imaging results showed 38 parasites in Denman's brain, and she was initially suspected of having toxoplasmosis. However, after her mother reminded the doctors of the strip of parasites she had seen earlier, further examinations led to a diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.Denman spent two weeks in the hospital receiving parasite-killing medications and steroid treatment. Her health improved in the first few years but deteriorated again when she returned to work.The follow-up examinations revealed significant edema around the parasites in her brain. During this period, Denman experienced confusion, numbness, intense anxiety, panic attacks, and psychosis, and she received treatment in the neuropsychiatry department for six weeks.Denman had to leave her job due to the severe process she underwent. After years of treatment, it was announced that the parasites in her brain had died and become calcified, rendering them harmless.According to the World Health Organization, neurocysticercosis can be caused by consuming undercooked pork, contaminated water and food with tapeworm eggs, or poor hygiene.Denman, who has regained her health, explained why she shared her experiences with the public, saying, "I want to raise awareness about this disease and make my difficult experience have a positive outcome."
