Meteorite Impact: A Discovery That Excites Scientists
In July 2024, a meteorite traveled through the New York skies at a speed of 51,500 km/h, eventually piercing the roof of a house in New Jersey and landing in the bedroom. The meteorite was observed by approximately 60 people across the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. According to the SETI Institute, the meteorite then broke into numerous small pieces over Staten Island and New Jersey. The homeowner described the experience as

I was home at the time. I heard a loud noise and noticed a hole in the ceiling of the master bedroom. There was a strong, sulfurous smell. I saw that my bed, carpet, and surroundings were covered in black particles and black dust.

.Researchers discovered amino acids, carbon-based compounds, and prebiotic molecules in the meteorite. These findings may contribute to understanding how the fundamental building blocks of life were transported to Earth.Scientists found evidence of 'high-density salty liquids' in the meteorite fragments. This environment could have facilitated the formation of molecules crucial to the emergence of life on Earth.
