The Dangers of Fructose Consumption: Targeting the Brain, Liver, and Waistline

The excessive consumption of fructose, a sugar commonly known as fruit sugar, has been viewed as 'natural' and harmless for a long time. However, new research reveals that it may be associated with various chronic health problems, ranging from fatty liver disease to type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and heart diseases.
Fructose is not only found in fruits. Table sugar is composed of approximately 50% fructose and 50% glucose. Many packaged foods, such as soft drinks, ketchup, flavored yogurts, granola, and ready-made sauces, also contain significant amounts of fructose.
According to experts, one of the biggest risks is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is widely used in processed foods to reduce costs. While it is commonly consumed in the US, similar products are used in Europe and the UK under the name 'glucose-fructose syrup'.
Professor Robert Lustig states that not all sugars have the same effects, despite the common saying 'sugar is harmful'. He argues that fructose, in particular, may increase the risk of fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and even dementia.
The human body needs glucose to produce energy. Cells break down glucose to produce ATP, the energy molecule. Fructose, on the other hand, is metabolized differently. According to Lustig, fructose has no primary function and is mostly processed in the liver.
To mitigate the harmful effects of fructose, various supplements or dietary methods have been suggested. However, Professor Lustig approaches these with caution. He says, 'There is no magic pill. Supplements do not eliminate the effects of fructose. The most effective method is to reduce the intake of added fructose from ultra-processed foods as much as possible.'
