France Battles Fires: Heat Alarm Issued, Hundreds of Thousands Evacuated
The ongoing forest fires in France's Gironde region have intensified ahead of a new heatwave, with authorities concerned that the 40-degree temperatures will hinder firefighting efforts. Over 220,000 people have been evacuated across the country in recent days. Gironde Regional Prefect Sophie Brocas stated that 14 previously affected areas experienced re-ignitions on Tuesday. Meteorological officials announced that the fourth heatwave of the summer will begin on Wednesday, with temperatures in the Gironde region expected to reach 40 degrees. National Federation of Firefighters spokesperson Eric Brocardi said that approximately 2,000 firefighters are working tirelessly to control the fires in the vast area between Bordeaux and the Atlantic coast. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist urged residents in at-risk areas to stay indoors as much as possible, citing concerns over air quality.
