Heatwave Hits French Nuclear Power Plants: 3 Reactors Shut Down
A heatwave in France has led to the temporary shutdown of three nuclear reactors by energy company EDF, in order to comply with environmental regulations. High temperatures above seasonal norms in Western and Central Europe have increased pressure on the energy infrastructure. EDF announced the closure of three nuclear reactors due to the excessive heating of river waters used for cooling. The reactors that have been shut down are Golfech 2, Bugey 3, and Chooz 2. The total capacity of these reactors is 3.65 gigawatts, accounting for approximately 6% of France's installed nuclear production capacity. According to weather forecasts, Bugey 3 is expected to remain closed until July 19, Golfech 2 until July 22, and Chooz 2 until July 25.
