Rise in Stillbirths and Newborn Deaths in France

Recent research has shown that there has been a significant increase in stillbirths and newborn deaths within the first 7 days of birth in France since 2021. This phenomenon, known as 'perinatal infant mortality', refers to the death of a baby either before or within a week of birth. According to a study conducted in France, in 2024, out of a total of 661,822 births, 7,398 babies fell victim to this condition. The causes of this condition include factors such as maternal age, number of fetuses, and socioeconomic conditions of the mother. However, these factors only partially explain the increase seen since 2021, and stillbirths are considered the main reason for the rise in perinatal infant mortality.
