Finland Lifts Ban on Nuclear Weapons

Finland has introduced new legislation allowing the import, storage, and use of nuclear weapons on its territory. Following this change, the legal framework in Finland now permits the import, production, storage, and use of nuclear weapons.The amendments to the nuclear energy law and the penal code, approved by Finnish President Alexander Stubb on June 26, have altered the country's legal stance on nuclear weapons. Moscow has expressed its discomfort with this decision, stating that it poses a threat to Russia's national security.Helsinki has repeatedly stated that it does not intend to become a nuclear power and has no plans to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory during peacetime, while also affirming its commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). However, the Russian Embassy in Helsinki has pointed out that these assurances are not enshrined in law.
