The presence of UNRWA in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and the occupied territories is crucial for protecting the rights of millions of Palestinian refugees, both on a humanitarian and political level.During the last Security Council session, the US representative accused UNRWA of supporting terrorism and Hamas without any basis. However, an independent investigation led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna and the UN's own review completely debunked these allegations.
Hreyshi added. The diplomat pointed out that one of the main factors hindering the agency's activities is the chronic financial crisis. He recalled that the United States had been the largest donor to UNRWA for many years but completely stopped funding during the Donald Trump administration.Israeli officials have turned their attacks on UNRWA into a systematic campaign, which has included the seizure of agency offices in Jerusalem and the arson of buildings.
Hreyshi explained.Hreyshi noted that UNRWA was initially established with a "temporary" mandate of three years but has had to be repeatedly extended due to circumstances. He stated that the Palestinian side is ready to close the agency but only under one condition:We call on all friends of Palestine to increase their support urgently. The collapse of UNRWA would deprive over 5 million innocent refugees of education and health services.
We will be the first to relinquish UNRWA's services, but only when the occupation ends, our people gain the legitimate right to self-determination, and the right of return and compensation for refugees is guaranteed under UN Resolution 194.
