A Historic First for the Euro: Old Banknotes to be Collected, New Designs Emerging
The European Union's common currency, the Euro, is undergoing its first major design change since its introduction in 2002. The European Central Bank (ECB) has presented 10 new concepts to the public. The feedback process for the new banknotes has begun. The new Euro designs revolve around two main themes: Culture and Nature. The Culture-themed Euro concept features iconic figures who have made their mark on European history on its front side: The back of these banknotes features public life scenes that reflect artistic and intellectual life. The Nature-themed Euro concept visualizes various bird species amidst unique natural landscapes of the European continent. The ECB has launched an official survey on its website to gather citizens' opinions. The survey, which will be open until September 21, will contribute to the design process. However, the final decision on the new Euro design will be made jointly based on the survey results, a second quantitative study, and the evaluation of an expert jury.
